Staffer for Upstate NY congressman arrested at US Capitol with ammunition

A staff member for an Upstate New York congressman has been arrested at the U.S. Capitol with ammo and magazines.
WHAM reports Michael Hopkins, 38, was taken into custody after U.S. Capitol Police found four ammunition magazines and 11 rounds of ammunition in his bag during routine X-ray screening at the Cannon House Office Building in Washington, D.C., on Monday morning. Hopkins reportedly told police he forgot the ammo was in his bag.
No gun was recovered, according to Reuters.
Hopkins is charged with unlawful possession of ammunition, including a charge for possession of a high-capacity magazine.
Hopkins was communications director for U.S. Rep. Joe Morelle (D-Irondequoit). Morelle’s office said he was fired “immediately” after the incident.
“This morning, our office was informed that a member of our staff was arrested by Capitol Police. We are currently gathering more information regarding the circumstances of the arrest. Our office is fully committed to cooperating with the investigation,” Morelle’s chief of staff Jo Stiles said in a statement Monday. “As Ranking Member of the Committee on House Administration, Congressman Morelle is devoted to ensuring a safe and secure workplace for all.”
Morelle, who was born in Utica and grew up in Irondequoit, is a Democrat who has represented New York’s 25th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2018. He previously served as majority leader of the New York State Assembly.
